Health & Fitness Friday: Birthday Cake Overload

It's that time again friends!

So do all of you remember that time I lost 5 pounds for this DietBet thing and then I ate birthday cake for a week straight and gained half of it back?

Last Friday I shared the fabulous news that I had FINALLY made my goal weight after losing 5.8 pounds for my DietBet and you'd think after a month of re-teaching myself about portion control and making better decisions...I would have been stronger and more motivated to resist all the pizza and birthday cake that's been thrown my way this week.

Not so much.

I think I just went a little overboard on the celebrating and in addition to that, I skipped several workouts because we've been so crazy busy. But enough of the excuses. I did weigh myself at the end of the day yesterday, which is never a good idea, but I think it was the reality check I needed. I did NOT work my ass off for a month just to be back where I started two weeks later.

Plus, it dawned on me this weekend that I have exactly ONE MONTH to prepare for the Shamrock Shuffle 8K. Last year I ran the 5 miles in 55 minutes which was good and a definite improvement from the previous year...but I made a goal that I wanted to run it in under 50 minutes this year (and by under 50 I mean I would be happy with 49:59. ha!)

But if I am going to do that and shave more than 5 minutes off my time, I have to get serious with the running and log WAY more miles the next 4 weeks.

I did run a very hilly 4 miles this weekend and kept a fairly decent pace. But it's still not quite good enough if I am going to get under 50 minutes so I need to kick it up a notch with interval training again.

And speaking of interval training, I did try something new in addition to my Ripped in 30 workouts this week. I found Jillian's Treadmill Workout and for only 10 minutes of running, I worked up a good sweat! The two workouts pair well together and burn quite a few calories for only 35 minutes.

But like I said...I need to start logging more miles too. So my goal for this week is to do my last 3 days of Ripped in 30: Week 4 (with the treadmill interval workout) and then get in one short run during the week and one long run on the weekend. The weather is supposed to be nicer around here too so I am hoping to get outside for both of those :-)

Now...I don't know what to say about HEALTH, other than I totally blew it this week. Ha!

I also didn't do a ton of cooking like I had planned, but that had a lot to do with all the celebrating we did and all the leftovers we had around the house. But all that is going to change this week because the kids and I need a MAJOR detox. As soon as this leftover cake gets eaten at our playdate today...sugar is going bye-bye for a few days. It won't be pretty for any of us...but it needs to happen.

So here is our menu for the week, starting today:

FRIDAY: Buffalo Chicken Wraps (because we didn't get to them last week)
SATURDAY: Dinner Out
MONDAY: Crockpot Chili and Cornbread Muffins
TUESDAY: Leftovers
WEDNESDAY: Chicken Fajitas
THURSDAY: Roasted Vegetable Paninis and Homemade Mac & Cheese for the kiddies.

Well I hope you all had a much better week than I did in the Health & Fitness department!! But today is a new day and I am ready to start this week off on the right foot!

  1. I love the treadmill workouts. I think I'm gonna try them. I'm afraid to tell you that is a rule of being a mother in these parts to consume you body weight in cake at your kids birthday. After all your celebrating that you gave birth to them on that day. Keep up the good work friend.

  2. I know it's sooooo frustrating to gain back pounds you just lost. But - you also have to live and enjoy life, and birthday cake is just part of that! Good luck with running this week!

  3. I did some interval training on Monday. It is no joke. But it does make the run go very quick. I also did body works on Monday. I think I have pulled my quad during all the lunges we did in the class. Just a minor pull but I had a lot of tightness during my run on Wednesday. Hoping I can pull out my 5k tommorrow! You'll lose the couple pounds you put back on in no time!

  4. Jillian Michaels and a treadmill make a great combination! See my link up :-)
I never understand how it can be so easy to set a goal, so difficult to achieve it and then so easy to erase all the work we put in to accomplish it. Definite "Grrrr" moment. The good news is "Tomorrow is a new day." But Samantha is right...birthday cake is just a part of life that can't be ignored. Don't beat yourself up too much. Good luck with training.

  5. I've done that way too many times with birthday cake, donuts, kid treats, etc. Wish I could just flip a switch and turn off the sugar addiction I've got. So horrible.

  6. eeesh I've so been there with the not so good weeks. But you are so right, today is a new day and you will ROCK IT! I so love your fit friday link up and I hope you check out my fitness blog! I think we have a ton in common! <3
